TEMPLE OF ARTEMIS 2018-2020

The Artemis Outreach Project

As offshoot of the larger conservation project, our team is working on an outreach project to understand how locals and the visiting public understand and interpret the ancient site. This outreach will investigate how the ancient and modern interact.

Jordan has experienced rapid development and social change over the previous three decades and continues to work towards a greater social, political, and economic transformation. We strongly believe cultural heritage is a key aspect in this transformation and that Jerash has the potential to be a successful case study for the regeneration of an urban area focusing around its heritage.

Artemis aims to start a process of re-branding the archaeological site, starting from the history of its own community and the stories that make it unique.

Through a visitor study of the tourists to Jerash and the involvement and contribution of the local community, we want to give a substantial contribution to the sustainable management of the archaeological site of Jerash.

The modern city behind the Artemis capitals.

Our objective outcomes are an onsite and promotional strategy for the site of Jerash as well as a documentary to share the narratives connected to ancient Jerash and the Temple of Artemis.

Through interviewing individuals, our objective is to bridge the gap between the Department of Antiquities with the local communities and the site stakeholders in order to understand how this archaeological area is perceived today with regard to its cultural, economic, political, social values.

Another objective of this project is to improve awareness of the archaeological heritage through presentations, public events, social media, and other activities. Among these, part of the video archive will be organized to build up a short ‘insider online guide’, both in Arabic and English. All the activities are meant to enhance the identity between antiquities and people: there is no identity without a shared heritage and there is no heritage without awareness of it.

We will continue to post tips and stories from locals on this page as well as our social media. If you yourself have a story to tell about these enchanting ruins, please send us a note and share it with us.
